Hello,

This is due to failure of one or more of your shift bushings. They are small round plastic bushings that allow for smooth and quiet operation of the shifter, when they are all intact.

I will be writing a guide for replacement of these in the future but for now hopefully it is helpful to know what the problem is. If you search Google for w123 shift bushing replacement you will find a lot of info.

Thank you for your very helpful answer. But I have another problem. What kind of bracket or "lock" that holds the bushing cap for the spring that pushes the shifting pin? I think I lost mine. Can you please show an image of the bracket, please? Thanks and more power!

Hello, while I'm not completely sure if you and I are talking about the same item I feel fairly confident you're referring to the "clip" that holds the bushing on the Linkage. If I'm correct and we are on the same page, here is the part you need:

Nicolas is correct. The shifter bushings can get so worn out that when one THINKS the car is in PARK and tries to start the car, it won't because the linkage in incorrectly adjusted due to worn or MISSING bushings.
