Can I switch hard drives from other mac laptops?

I have a Macbook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Model A1211 and my hard drive fried. I have a friend who has a bunch of unused laptops lying around at work and is willing to give me a compatible hard drive for replacement, though he doesn't know which hard drives are compatible. I would like to let him know without the need to open one up. I'm thinking that he only has the white macbooks. What hard drives are compatible for my laptop and would earlier models suffice?

None of the PowerBooks or iBooks will have SATA drives. Apple started using SATA drives with the advent of the MacBook in laptops. Before that they were all IDE, EIDE and ATA.

Any SATA laptop hard drive would be compatible with your MacBook Pro.
