I have a Kohler 18 hp motor that was on a regular riding mower. Can it be placed on a Zero turn mower?

That depends on the motor mounts, the output shaft length and diameter. The Ariens Zoom 42 and 50 use Kohler twin cyl engines, so it does sound possible.

It's a Ariens 42 in and the regular riding mower is 18hp off a Murray I was told that since the blade engage on the regular isn't a push and pull button like on zero turns it wouldn't work

The blade engage etc. is most likely done through a drive system and a couple of clutches. your mower should have a hydrostatic drive etc. So not quite sure what you mean by this "the blade engage on the regular isn't a push and pull button"
