not powering when plugged in to adapter

mp3 player was plugged to 9 volts but the rating of the mp3 plaayer was only 5 volts

What is the brand and model or other identification of the device? Many devices have internal voltage regulators that can protect against over voltage.

Its just a typical FM radio plus mp3 player.

I am just wondering what I should check, whether diodes or capacitors etc.
