How do I fix a corroded battery before it ruins my camera?

I have not used my camera for a long time and the batteries have gone bad and started to corrode inside of the battery compartment. Has this completely ruined my camera? I'm afraid to turn it on to check.

No, you most likely do not need to buy a new camera, but you will need a new battery. Before you put in the new battery, wipe the interior of the battery compartment clean using a rag dampened in vinegar. Be sure not to get the rag too wet. Wring the rag out before using it to clean the compartment. Leave the compartment open to dry before inserting the battery. Also feel free to consult the Troubleshooting Guide for the device for further help.

Actually, a AA battery is alkaline (or a chemical base). So, you want to neutralize it. This can be done with vinegar (a mild acid).

Except for the baking soda, the process "posted 5 days ago" is similar. You could use a cotton swab to apply the vinegar with better control/access. Then, use the water-wetted rag for lean up.
