Touchscreen nonresponsive. Related to home button flex cable?

Hello, I am working on a 5s for a friend and am kind of stuck. I received a beautiful 5s with no visual damage. powers on fine. just the touch screen is nonresponsive. Nothing at all. I opened the phone and noticed the home button flex cable cover (little metal clip) was missing. So I continued. I removed the screen and inspected. I see no signs of liquid damage and other than the clip missing everything else looks fine. I asked my friend to explain what happened and he said it was working fine he keeps it in a good case and it just stopped working. He said he didn't drop it or anything. He had a local "fix it shop" look at it and they put a new lcd/digi on and still didn't work. I am assuming they lost that clip for me :)

So I ordered a new lcd/digi and put it on. I noticed that the touchscreen works perfect until I attach the home button flex cable. As soon as home button is attached, it goes nonresponsive again. I unplug the home button and it works again.

Is that little clip a grounding point or something??

I have anothe home button from a 5s that I will try in there tonight (I realise the touch ID will not function) but if it brings the digitizer back, the phone won't be a total brick.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Ok, I used a home button I had from a previous 5s repair and it seems to work fine. (With no Touch ID of course)

I guess it was something with the original home button causing the digi to stop working.

Wish I could pin point the issue. I hate to just throw parts at things but at least the phone is working.

Sorry to be a pain haha

I get home from work and check the phone. It is non responsive again.

I don't know what to look at now.

Without looking at the schematic to confirm, I don't think there is a relationship there. I think what you're describing is a coincidence. In order to attach the home flex, the screen has to be in a low position. If you truly are seeing a loss of touch function, I would suspect something on the screen grounding out on the frame.

I would bet that taking the home button off the screen, and plugging it in by itself with the screen in a raised position would not trigger the loss of touch that you're seeing.

Let us know if it does.

You were correct Jessa. I removed the home button from the display assembly and reattached. Everything works fine, even secured in the frame. I pulled the glass up again and attached the home flex cable (still loose from digi) and didn't change anything. And seems to work just fine.

So,,,, it works

1. When complete digi/lcd assembly is attached all the way up to plugging in the home button and pressing assembly into frame.

2 when home button is removed. (Even with assembly pressed into frame.

(Now, when I do this, there is no shield and screws at the connectors)

I just tried one more thing. I ran the home button flex through the hole and plugged the assembly in, then attached home flex and then secured assembly in frame. Works fine.

You think the issue is with the shield and screws? Or maybe the little spring clip on the home button?

In a case where the touchscreen will work and then stop working---I woud rule out software, that is an unusual hardware defect. Usually drop damage to the touch ic is all or nothing, and connector damage is all or nothing as well.

I was just reading through my updates in this thread and realized that they make it sound like the problem is fixed. Jessa's answer was helpful in determining that the home button flex cable was not the culprit...... but my touchscreen is still unresponsive.

Has anyone had this issue before?? I just do not know what else to look at. The phone will work for a few minutes after re-assembly then it is like once the phone goes to sleep. you press the home button or power button and it wakes up,,,, but the touchscreen is unresponsive. absolutely nothing.

Anyways,,, any help is greatly appreciated.
