Video only works on iMac not on laptop itself

Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2012 A1278

I bought a Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro used.

The video does not work on the laptop but the laptop works when I connect to my Imac.

Its got 8 GB memory and has a i7 processor.

I am trying to justify taking to Apple to pay the flat rate $280 or is it simply a cable I might be able to fix myself?

Can you explain how you accessed your MacBook Pro from your iMac. It will help us understand what is working and what is not.

I hooked up the MBP to a acer monitor not an iMac. I said that wrong. I tried to use my Thunderbolt from my MBP to my iMac but it didn't work.

I had a different connector and an Acer monitor and hooked it up and it shows just fine.

I ended up bringing it into Apple to pay the flat rate $280. I will report back should anyone else be experiencing this.
