Frequent Stalls/Hangs Caused by Hard Drive Issue

I read at AppleToolbox that

Users of mid-2010 MacBook Pros continue to experience frequent stalls/hangs . . . The problem appears to be hard drive-related, and occurs most frequently with the standard 320 GB 5400 RPM drive, but is also occurring with the 5400 500GB and 7200 500GB drives.

I assume this applies to the optional Apple-supplied drives but has anyone experienced this with a drive from a third party that they replaced themselves?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Why do you ask - are you experiencing that problem with a replacement drive from a third party?

by

No, I haven't bought the Macbook yet. I am considering buying the base model and upgrading the HD myself so I need to know in advance if I should do this or just get the expensive Apple upgrade.

The answer to your question lies right in the link you provided. The hangs seem to occur randomly and with different drives. So I would do what the other users have done and contact Apple and have the machine replaced and help Apple engineers resolve this issue.
