Volume down button not working.

Hello to all,

I have an iPhone 3G that had sea water damage. When I dismantled the phone, connector 5 and its socket of were heavily corroded but I've already cleaned it. I've managed to make the endless reboot stop by cleaning the terminals.

I have one more problem though, volume down button is not working. I wonder if this is a ribbon cable or motherboard problem. Any suggestions how to troubleshoot this problem? Thanks.

those buttons are simply some kind of metal foils.

you can open them and clean them too.

if there is something black inside - use a needle to scratch the stuff from the metal (don't bent the metal too much!)

UPDATE

since it's a board problem i would check the area around connector 5 (bottom left on the picture)

CLICK for a HUGEer version of the picture

i would also take a closer look at the areas with "power" stuff

good luck

Yes Markus, I agree. I even filed the tip of my soldering iron just to make it more pointed. I had to rest my arms somewhere to prevent my hands from shaking. I'm also not satisfied with my magnifying glass, I should have bought one that's more powerful.

I've seen one of those USB microscopes. They're only good for inspection. I think it's difficult to use it while soldering. Thanks again for your comments. The volume down key is working again. I hope it stays like that forever. =)
