Are there limitations to the power an upgraded gpu can consume?

I have a Mac Pro 2008 and am thinking of upgrading to a high-end graphics card. Is there a maximum power rating the card can consume? In other words, if I were to upgrade, is it possible for power consumption of the card to become an issue?

If the card needs more power than available from the PCI slot it will usually have a molex connector, and you graft off of the optical drive power cord by putting in a Y connector.

Be sure to get a card made for a Mac, not a flashed one.
