MacBook makes a whining sound when I hit the power button

MacBook Core Duo model number a1181 white...

my macbook makes a whining sound when i try to turn it on. the screen just flickers momentarily and never comes to life. but the power indicator will be showing that its on and the fan can be heard faintly running however it starts to heat up. what could be the cause and the possible solutions to this problem

See if you see a faint image on your screen. Place a flashlight on the backside of the lid shining though the Apple Logo when the system is running do you see your desktop and the icons on it?

If so, then your inverter and/or inverter cable needs replacing.

If not, do you have access to an external monitor? Try plugging it in and display on it?

i cant see anything. could it be the hard drive or ram since it makes the whining noise when i power it up

If the issue was RAM you would have gotten an error beep, if it was the HD you would have gotten a blinking question mark on the screen. Did you do the tests I outlined? Let us know what you discover.

Also try moving the screen back and forth to test the inverter cables and see if you get a screen picture or flicker.
