The fan in the left hand corner of my iMac is very noisy almost as soon as I boot up, and stays noisy all of the time. The temperature of the CPU is around 79 degrees Centigrade. I think that's very hot, as the limit is 85. Could it be that the CPU fan isn't working properly? Should I lubricate it/clean it?

I would definitely suggest you open the machine and have fun with the compressed air can. It can be either that ur fan is congested and therefore not cooling properly or it can be on its last leg and ready to go. If your at 79C while idle, thats not good. Unless youre running some intensive CPU and GPU programs you shouldnt be at that temperature. If the cleaning doesn't yield results, then I would replace the fan. Heat is electronics worst enemy, so until you figure this out, try to keep the use of the machine to a minimum.
