How long is a new battery's shelf life?

The battery in my 2011 Macbook Air began raising a "replace immediately" alert after 2.5 years of age. I ordered a new one, and waited for the old battery's charge to degrade, but it never did. That was over a year ago. It can still last for about two hours on a full charge. In the meantime, the ifixit battery I bought is still sitting on the shelf in its shipping box. While I continue to wait, is there any danger of the new battery getting "stale" and not working well when I finally do swap it in?

Hello,

from my experience the degradation of a battery life depends on the discharge/charging cycles. So if you leave the battery in its package on the shelf for a long time the chemical reactivity of the single battery cells should remain at a very high level. Although the battery could loose some voltage after some time.

I've exactly the same question, but my MBP 2009 Model still holds a charge of 2-3 hours. I've got a new battery sitting in my shelf since OS X keeps telling me to replace it, but I don't want to replace it until the old one inside the MBP has been completely used out.
