If you upgrade SSD on a laptop, won't you lose Windows OS?

If you swap out SSD on a laptop for more GB of space, wouldn't you lose the Windows OS which was preloaded onto the old SSD, and the new SSD that you bought would be completely empty/blank? How do you manage that swap?

Thanks.

Use a Universal adapter like this and a duplication program: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20T...

iFixit used to sell this but due to the lack of a tool search engine, I CAN'T FIND IT TO GIVE YOU A LINK TO IT.

Brian, yes you would and you would have to reinstall the OS.

Wouldn't you guys agree that the cloning option would be easier? Disk to Disk, minus having to find an external drive and dealing with an image file..

And Brian, When you successfully install your SSD...Never defrag your SSD. Newer computers have a different BIOS that detects SSD's and disables the defrag function automatically. Defraging an SSD will shorten the lifespan greatly.

You will need to create an image of the current hard drive first using a disk duplication application like Ghost or Acronis True Image. Save the image to an external hard drive. Install your new hard drive and then place the image onto the new hard drive.

This will place your OS and all of your applications on the new hard drive as if it were on the original. No need to re-install the OS or any of your applications.

Use CloneZilla software to copy from the hard drive to the SSD drive. http://clonezilla.org/

Require an external USB to SATA connector to connect the new SSD drive to the computer, if you don't have a spare SATA port or are using a laptop.
