Blank screen, no backlight

The screen on my iPhone 5 no longer comes on.

I can hear the clicks as I tap on the passcode screen but it remains completely black with no backlight.

I have dropped it numerous times but the screen never broke and I never had any issues (it's in a good Belkin case).

In the past 6 months the battery performance has deteriorated, sometimes it needed charging 2 or 3 times per day with medium-low usage.

I am on the road a lot so I use a generic cable and cigarette adaptor in my car to keep it from dying.

And now suddenly the screen went blank; I do not recall it happening after dropping it, it just seems to have happened.

Can anyone suggest how I can diagnose the problem?

Open it up to see if the lcd connector has popped off, this should't happen as there is a plate over the top to prevent it happening but you never know, other then that it's probably best to try another screen on it.

So I have replaced the battery and display with items from IFixit however the screen is still blank.

I can hear the alert sound when I plug it in so I know it is working.

Do you have any ideas?

According to your analysis about the battery and screen , my guess would be your battery has failed and has swollen which has caused pressure on the lcd and caused it to break and no longer function.

Would this be easy to see if it was opened up (i.e. cracks) or could it be damaged without being visible?

You should be able to feel unevenness in the battery our possible slightly round. battery should be perfectly flat and around same height as logic board.
