iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display Hard Drive Replacement

Since the 1TB fusion drive and 256GB iMac are at same price, if i purchase an iMac with 256 GB SSD, is that possible to insert a HDD myself?

I mean, is the HDD holder will be installed in the iMac with 256GB SSD? and if it is installed, can i build myself a fusion drive with that HDD and the 256GB SSD

Review this IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display Hard Drive Replacement. So you have an idea how much work it will be to add in the HD.

Apple does not supply the needed cable connection for your new drive (see Step 31). You'll need to order it as well as the frame (Step 33).

As this is such a new system you've not likely to find the parts available yet. If you have an Apple authorized service center near you you could try asking them to order them for you.

Now the rub:

Apple uses an internal thermal sensor so the HD drive you get will need to support the newer internal SMART standard. If the drive you want is not compliant you'll need this: OWC In-line Digital Thermal Sensor for Hard Drive Upgrade for 27" iMacs 2012 and Later.
