Why does my replacement battery not boot with power button?

I replaced my 3GS battery with the part from ifixit. It only boots when the power plug is plugged in. When it finally booted from the power plug, it crashed and booted in safe mode. The power/sleep button still works because I can use it to turn the phone off it is plugged in.

Took the battery back out and saw that one of the small metal cables had come free of the solder pad. Soldered it back together and good to go. I'm taking this as a sign that the iPhone will boot without a working battery if it is plugged in.
