Why does my MacBook turn on but not finish the boot process?

When I try and turn on my MacBook Core 2 Duo (Santa Rosa) it will turn on but not finish the boot process. The screen will go black, as if power is shutting off, but the fan still works. If I try turning it on and off (sometimes aborting an already failed boot attempt) enough times, it will finally start up.

I got it up and running after about two hours of turning it on and off and holding the power button, pulling out battery, etc. I'm wary of turning it off until I can get my files backed up. Once that is done I will try rebooting. Optical drive is an external drive, correct? I don't have one, but I'll try it using the DVD drive.

Thank you
