Water damage, new battery not charging

I've replaced the battery of this old phone after it got water damaged. With the new battery, the phone turned on and was working fine, but only for a few seconds. Then it sent me to the low battery screen. The charger was plugged in.

The screen shows only the battery icon with three red lines. No lightning or plug. When I remove the charger, the plug icon does appear, and the red in the battery starts flashing.

I'm going to replace the charging dock. Do you think this would resolve the issue, or is there any other component that could cause this problem?

I appreciate any clues you can give me.

Answer this question I have this problem too

I have replaced the charging dock, but the phone does not react anymore or display anything on the screen. I fear the faulty charging dock destroyed the battery before I replaced it, as this happened before the replacement. Is it conceivable that a broken dock could destroy a battery?

by

most likely not. remember that the charging dock connects your power lines to the charging circuit. Sounds like that is where the real issue lays.

Hi oldturkey, thank you for that insight. I found an older post of yours about the inductors on the logic board. I will try to troubleshoot those.

by

Measuring the inductors L3 and L4, their DCR was the same but lower than most other inductors on the board (less than 1 ohm). That's not quite what I would have expected from their specs. Could this mean they are shorted? I don't have the means to check/reach the D604 diode.

I used this thread as a reference:

iPhone 4s not charging

I also made double sure that the dock was properly plugged into the logic board. Still no reaction.

Usually an inductor reads a very low resistance across its terminals. If an inductor reads a high resistance, it is considered defective. If it reads less than one ohm (very close to 0Ω), this may be a sign that it's shorted. Functional inductors normally read greater than 1Ω and normally less than 10Ω.

The charging dock has a water damage sticker on the back if the colour is red not white you should consider changing the charging dock, when changed if the problem is same change the battery too and your problem will be solved.

Wish you luck to do it only with the charging codk

Thank you for your reply! All of the three damage stickers are completely red. Replacing the battery was the first thing I did, so hopefully it will work with a new dock.

Disconnect the batery then the lcd flex and reconnect again

Hi EmirMuric, thank you for the suggestion. I have in fact found some corrosion on the lcd flex connector, and I will deal with that too.
