iMac no booting up, only hard drive and super drive spinning

Hello iMac users.

This is an super cool website, and it seems like many users have benefitted from suggestions made by others.

I'm experiencing an issue from an iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134

I had this machine passed to me, with fault.

Removing the iMac's glass screen and screen it self , I can see the LED's on logic board and all components.

Pressing on/off switch iMac not booting up, hard drive start spinning, cd drive also spin. All of fans not working. Only the first three of four LED lights up when the machine is powered on. pressing the power button, the hard drive, cd drive kick off . This time the machine will simply hang in a constant state leaving the hard drive spinning.

I understand that the fourth LED light leads to indicate that the LCD could be faulty, or in my case just removed from machine due ease access to components.

The machine does not chime, neither does the LCD screen or secondary screen come to light. Mouse and keyboard light up but not respond.

Would anyone suggest I double-check the PSU with a voltimeter, or single out any other components before I resort to the problem being a fault of the logic board or graphics card.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Update :

Just take out graphic card, interesting is 3out 4 LED's ON ?

by

@michael: 'Only the first three of four LED lights up' Don't think its the graphics card if it was the 3rd LED wouldn't light (and maybe even the 4th LED).

by

it must be logic board, please take a look at the picture three out four led's on.

Without graphic Card

Is anything else that I can do with this board, how to diagnose what is wrong ?

by

Sadly, there is very little you can do to fix a logic board without having the needed tools and a bunch of replacement components to swap out. I gave up trying to get that deep, as my eyesight isn't what is use to be. for about $200 US you should be able to find a used logic board to replace yours.

If you are correct with the diagnostic LED's your main logic board has a problem (review the link above). Given the fact you don't have a Boot up Bong I don't see this as a graphics card issue but a main board issue.

Sadly, we don't have a logic board IFIXIT guide for your system, but this one is very close to what you'll need to do to swap it out: iMac Intel 24" EMC 2111 Logic Board Replacement. You should be able to locate a replacement board. Here are your possible replacements: iMac7,1 Series.

Michael, start with the easy stuff:"

No Video, No Boot Chime

The computer will turn on, but there is no boot chime and no video on the display. The faint sound of the fans, hard drive, and optical drive may also be heard.

1. Make sure all software updates have been applied to the computer. Refer to KBase article 303903, Intel-based iMac: Installing available updates , and to Apple Downloads for updates for the iMac (Mid 2007) model of computers.

2. Follow instructions in the “General Information” chapter to reset the SMC. Does the computer display video after successfully resetting the SMC?

Yes: Problem solved.

No: Continue to next step.

3. Verify that only supported SDRAM memory has been installed and that it has been installed correctly. Unsupported and/or defective memory can prevent the computer from booting. It may be necessary to install known good memory for testing purposes and replace any unsupported or defective SO-DIMM’s identified during this process. Does the computer display video after verifying and/or replacing the memory with known good memory?

Yes: Problem solved. Verify full system functionality before return the system to the customer.

No: Replace the logic board.

before replacing the logic board, check this as well:"

No Video, Boot Chime Heard

The computer will turn on, the boot chime can be heard and activity from the fan or drive can be heard, but the display has no picture or color.

1. Make sure all software updates have been applied to the computer. Refer to KBase article 303903, Intel-based iMac: Installing available updates , and to Apple Downloads for all available updates for the iMac (Mid 2007) model of computers.

2. Check if the computer is sleeping. Press the space bar to wake the computer from sleep mode. Did the computer wake from sleep?

Yes: Put the computer to sleep from the Apple menu and wake the computer again to test. Check Energy Saver setting to see when the computer has been designated to sleep.

No: Continue to next step.

3. Reset your computer’s PRAM (Parameter RAM):

Shut down the computer.--

Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. --

Turn on the computer.--

Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys simultaneously. You must press this key --combination before the gray screen appears.

Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the --second time.

Release the keys.--

4. Does the computer display video after successfully resetting the computer’s PRAM?

Yes: Restart the computer from the Apple menu and make sure the computer is now working correctly.

No: Continue to next step.

5. Make sure the machine is powered off, and remove the access door and front bezel to access the diagnostic LEDs. Plug in and start up the computer to observe the diagnostic LEDs. At this point in the Power On process, you should hear a boot chime, and LED #1 and #2 are On. Is LED #3 On or Off?

LED # 3 is On: The video card and logic board are communicating properly. Go to the next step.

LED # 3 is Off: The video card and logic board are not communicating. Replace the video card. If the issue persists, replace the main logic board.

6. LED #4 should be On when the video card and LCD display have communicated properly to produce a video image. Is LED #4 On or Off?

LED #4 is On: The video card and LCD display have communicated to produce video. In this case, there is a problem with the backlights in the panel or the inverter. Verify the inverter cable is fully inserted into the cable connector on the inverter and check that the wires have not been pinched. Replace the inverter cable first and then the LCD panel if the problem persists.

LED # 4 is LED # 4 is Off: The video card and logic board are unable to communicate to generate video. Replace the video card and install the iMac Graphics Firmware Update.. If the issue persists, replace the LCD display.

I can't do this update an and other stuff, iMac is not booting up. Also iMac not responding on mouse and keyboard (usb ports -power up )

I Also try >Unplug the iMac. Hold down the power-on button, and while STILL HOLDING IT DOWN, plug the iMac into the wall outlet.

All fan's kick off, hard drive and super drive start spinning.

Does anything change? NO

I am running out of ideas

by

Also graphic card is out of iMac, interesting is 3 out 4 LED's ON ?

by

For that reason I am not convinced it is a bad logic board.

by

Hmmm..

I'm open on any ideas

by

Just to let you know guys. I Purchased second hand logic board.

I will come back with update after receiving parcel in beginning of March

Keep fingers crossed
