Why does my mac no longer see the external mic input?

I have a 2003 macG4. I am attempting to use garageband with an external mic port input with my korg keyboard. Coming out of the left channel korg output (mono) to the mac line-in. I am using a standard 1/4" phono cable (male-to-male), then into a 1/4" to mini adator to go into the mac.

My mac does not "see" the line-in port.

Did I "blow" the port with this set-up?

Should I have used the headphone out from the korg instead? I tried setting the references (both mac & garage band) and it still does not see the line in. It does however, see the usb...so, what the..?

Adaptors

are notorious weak spots in cabling. Try a direct patch cord.

Hey thanks. It's me, the guy with the problem. So, you're saying the adaptor from 1/4" phone to mini into my line/mic in on the side of my '03 G4 may be suspect? What would a direct line in be then? A device with a straight mini in? Ok, I will try that. Would you suggest I also try a new adaptor? And nobody answered whether or not I could have "blown" the on-deck input with the source I was (possibly) sending (Korg left channel (mono) out, as opposed to the Korg headphone out - (lower wattage, I think).

Well, if you're using a 2003 PowerMac G4, they do have a history of problems in the audio system. Though there's a low chance that you actually blew the connection, if you did, and you have a PowerMac (Not an iMac, Mac Mini, iBook, or PowerBook)G4, you can put in a PCI audio card, that is mac compatible to use for sound I/O. M-Audio has a few different mac-compatible PCI cards on there website, if it is required.

Please update your original question only Answers go here. Yes a straight wired (soldered) patch cord - no adaptors. I agree with Chris on the likely hood of blowing the port, and what's a good workaround.

My mac does not reconize my external mike on Skype. I can plug my ipod in to it with a male to male patch cord, and it shows response on the output scale, but the person on the other end of skype cant hear it. Help.
