The display will not come on but the ipad is on

When I turn on the ipad (generation one) the screen will not come on. When I shut it off it shows the swipe to turn off. Nothing comes up on the screen other than that.

Options

Start with a simple hard reboot: press and hold power/lock button + home button together for ~12 seconds. Restart the iPad (if it has not restarted by then) and test. Let us know if this helps or we'll take it from there.
