Laptop screen stays black on startup, weird tapping noise?

I tried to turn my Toshiba satellite c855-1gn on and the screen stays completely black, no cursor or anything. A quick bit of googling and I tried the unplugging all power sources (including battery) and holding down power button fix. That didn't work, I tried it 5 times. Also discovered f8 fix but pressing it multiple times did nothing either.

In addition to the screen, my laptop is also making a kind of tapping/clicking noise, quite quiet and faint.

Is it possible it's a virus? And if so, is it fixable? I've heard it could be the motherboard too, if that's faulty is there any way of salvaging it?

Thanks

Sounds like your Hard Drive is dead. Try taking out your HD and plugging it into another computer/ or a external hard drive dock. If it boots up/ reads the HD then that might not be your problem. If you cannot boot to it or read the files then its shot.

Thanks, I've taken it to a repair shop and the guy seemed to think it was a motherboard issue. If it is the hard drive, is that fixable? Can I still get my files from it?

Gotcha, Well if it ends up being the Hard Drive, you might be able to recover your files depending on how much you wanna spend. That can be a costly recover if its even possible... and if the files are worth saving to you. If it is the HD its likey that you wont be able to repair it. It will just need replaced.
