Replacement hard drive choices

The drive order page states "Important: To ensure compatibility with the 2009 and 2010 21.5" or 27" iMac, the replacement hard drive must be of the same brand as the original." I assume that is because of varying connections.

Does any one know if it is possible to replace a WD HD with a Seagate HD in a 2010 iMac?

Thank you.

I was thinking of a hybrid Seagate, but now I've had second thoughts. I think I'll just end up replacing the 1TB WD with a 3TB WD. Even then, from what I've read, I'll probably still have fan issues. Either hooking up an exterior drive temp sensor or some drive temp monitoring software seems to be the solution.

I wouldn't panic here. If you want to go with the Seagate SSHD I'd go for it! Its just only a cable. Here's the Apple P/N Cable, Temp Sensor, Hard Drive: Seagate - 922-9216. Don't forget to check your systems firmware in any case. Follow this Apple T/N: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

As to fan issues nope! As long as you use the correct cable for the drive you'll be fine. I think you're reading about the '11 models which use a different sensor setup than yours. Even the '11 model issue has been fixed now using a special cable or using the most current drives that support the newer SMART spec internal drive sensor. But again this is not an issue in your system as the sensor connector block is also active (backward compatible).

Well... It's a lot easier same for same. But you can also change things about as well. You'll need to swap out the sensor cable with the correct unit depending on what drive you plan to put in.

What are you looking at for a replacement drive?

Thank you for your help. I've decided just to stay with another, although larger, WD drive.
