My iPod boots up, syncs, and plays, but will not output sound.

I prematurely replaced the headphone jack thinking that was the problem - which didn't work - and then realized it also won't output through the docking jack to my stereo. Yes, I dropped it.

a common problem are shot capacitors on the logicboard (c145 & c146). you can see them in step 8 of the logic board guide. the two orange parts are sometimes defective/shot/burned. they are 220µF capacitors and if they are "bad" they could look like this:

Block Image

it could also be a problem with the P5021C-TDF - this part is the black one, left from the burned piece on the image above

the solderings of this chip failed on many 5g iPod's in less than a year - if you want to read more about it: CLICK here

if you open your iPod (enough to reach the black chip i mentioned) - and play some music - try to press slightly with your finger in the back thing - now you should hear the music

markus weiher - Hi I realise that this is a very old post but seeing as you seem to have extensive knowledge on these Ipods, I was wondering if you might know where I can get a circuit schematic for ther Ipod 5th Gen video. Thanks and I’ll look at those two caps and chip that you mention to see if I can fix mine. I have sound when inb the dock but nothing them the headphone port.

by

@pedro147 markus weiher hasn't been on here since 2011. Schematics are not available for this iPod. Replace your headphone jack flex then re-evaluate

by

@oldturkey03 thanks I thought that it was worth a try :) I have ordered the flex and I'll test the two caps for shorts later and see. If the flex doesn't fix it I'll replace the caps.
