MacBook Air (Original) 120 GB Hard Drvie for my A1237

I ordered a 120 GB hard drive for my MacBook Air (original) Model A1237 as an upgrade to help in performance and when I installed it received a folder icon with a question mark. When I tried to install the original OS from the original restore DVDs (version OS X 10.5.2), a later version of my Mac OS X version 10.6.8, the hard drive was not recognized. I re-installed the original hard drive with a Intel Core 2 duo processor 1.6 GHz with 2GB memory, I'm back to my old configuration again. It appears the attempt to upgrade my hard drive back to the original operating system (10.5.2) didn't work! Where did I go wrong? Now after becoming very familiar with the guts of my MacBook Air I'm not noticing the fan on, and mother board is really hot to the touch. Suggestions?
