Upgrade to solid state drive

Hi, I'm running into an issue with my diy upgrade. I bought an mSata drive to put into my iPod classic 7th gen. When I installed it and turned the iPod on, the screen lit up but did nothing else. Then I thought, maybe the adapter didn't work so I found a Super Talent 128gb solid state drive and tried that. Same problem. The screen just lights up. The screen is bright if I don't plug it in to the usb cable but if I do, it's dimmer. I've read that when people do this, it usually starts up with a screen that says the iPod needs to be restored with iTunes but I've gotten nothing but a blank lit screen. Can anyone help me figure out what to do? I'm very close to just putting in my old hard drive and abandoning the idea altogether.

Could be the mSATA adapter doesn't work with the iPods.

Make sure that the adapter you got is a 3.3 V operation, not 5V. mSATA drives and iPods use 3.3V main voltage bus. I have successfully done this same upgrade.
