After replacing the connector port phone wont charge unless turned off

Ok so I charged my phone a month ago while in the bathroom and must have got a splash of water on the charger, plugged it in to my iPhone and shorted the connecting port.

I replaced the port and had trouble getting it to charge, I had to fiddle with the charger a bit to get the charge icon to come up. The last couple of times I have tried to get it to charge it doesn't come up at all.

I have found that the only way to get some charge is to have is turned off and charge or have the phone on standby mode plugged in to get charge.

How can I fix this? Do I need to replace the port again or is it stuffed?
