Attempting to reinstall via USB Thumb drive, computer turns off

I am attempting to reinstall MAC OSX onto a Mac Pro tower (it is either a 2011 or 2012 model, I am fixing it for a friend).

He deleted the OS from it, but the recovery is still available when I boot the computer and hold down alt/option, but when I select the recovery or select my bootable USB OSX, the computer seems to 'hang' and then it cuts the power.

My friend says that it worked for him before, but he forgot the password and attempted to reinstall the OSX but did it wrong.

Has anyone else seen something like this and if so, what advice could you give?

Thanks

Try holding down Command R and tell us know if that works. Knowing the last four figures of the serial number may tell us what you have.

When I do command R I get this still - http://i.imgur.com/6afmuIj.png but if I hold down "option/alt" I get the choice of which drive I want to boot from, only it doesn't seem to want to boot from anything.

I will have to look up where the serial number is located, hopefully on the physical body of the computer as I cannot get into anything like Disk Utility etc. I did reset the PRAM.

I have not worked on one of these yet. I'd look on the bottom for the serial number.

Copy that. Thanks for the help, I will look for that and get it up here.

I found the serial number:

Thanks for any help you can provide

This serial number is showing me a first generation 2006 MacPro. I have worked on a lot of these. Is this what you have? Do you know what Mac OS was on it?http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-loo...
