Unit can't power on after replacement of bulging battery

Hi all,

This problem is very similar to other threads on this forum in that my computer is unable to turn on using the power button, and that the computer will power up if the battery is disconnected, and the AC adapter connected.

The rub is this; (I have not found this issue on this forum)

the Air has suffered a bulging battery which started to deform the case. When the problem was noticed, the unit was powered off and the battery removed. I remember that the unit was running slowly and could not shut down by itself; I had to hold the power button to shut it off.

After removing the bad battery, which had swelled considerably, I ordered an OEM replacement from a local battery distributor.

The battery arrived, I installed it, and during the install I noticed some slight warping in the battery itself; it was tricky to get all the screws going.

The AC adapter was attached, the unit powered on, and I used it for a few hours before shutting it off.

Then, the unit didn't turn back on. No response from the power button, no fan noise, no white power lamp, and resetting the SMC (shift+ctl+optn+pwr) produced no response from the AC adapter light; I was able to power the unit up by disconnecting the battery, connecting the AC adapter, and reconnecting the battery, at which point the battery charged normally.

I was able to reset the NVRAM by powering the unit up and restarting it. The computer restarts, sleeps and runs normally; it just can't turn itself on without removing the battery.

This computer has not been exposed to a liquid spill; but I wonder about corrosive gases from the battery.

Thank you very much for reading, and I appreciate any advice.

-Jeff

I think it's possible that the swollen battery pinched or nicked the trackpad ribbon cable, which ties into the keyboard/power on circuitry thereby shorting it so it won't work when a battery is installed..

Check over those cables - perhaps - some electrical tape as an insulator may cover any nick or cut. OR placing a thin cardboard shim on either side of the cables may stop the pinching.

If you try that and it works you may leave it , or, replace the cable.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I discovered no damage to the cable sets under the battery; I did however find a component on the motherboard which sits very close to the power connector and the battery plug and this component has heat discoloration and a slight bulge. This component is a small silver square block about 5mm across; there is another just like it closer to the fan. Could this component be the issue? What does it do?

I would like to upload a photo but I can't find out how on this forum.

Thanks
