What Options Are There to Fix a Damaged Headphone Jack?

I have owned this Dell Inspiron 15R Laptop for two years. Within those two years, the computer has experienced some physical impact. the laptop was working fine, until the headphone jack was unable to produce any sound in my headphones and the speakers.

This is the image of the jack currently.

I first started to have minor difficulties in hearing sound through my earphones. All i had to do was reinsert the headphone connector in to get sound. The minor became major when my first method wasn't working, and I had to wedge an object between the earphones and the surface in order to pick up audio. Later on up to today, all methods of hearing sound failed to work. The headphone jack may have been damaged to the point of not even hearing it from the speakers.

My only assumption is the abuse the laptop received from being in my book bag filled with books, and having to drop the bag on the ground repeatedly for two years.

Is it fixable? Are there options for getting it fixed? How much would it cost to have it fixed (via myself or a store that fixes computers)? What can I do to prevent this from happening again?

Been there done that, in fact mine was loose so I "fevi-quicked" my headphone cable to the jack and when I pulled the headphone cable out, pretty much everything came out with it.

So your options:

1) Change the chip-set.(too costly and not worth it)

2) Use USB sound-card, they usually give you far better sound. I am using steel series Siberia USB sound-card gives me 7.1 surround .

Thanks for the recommendations! I'll look into that Siberia sound card as well.
