Hard disc failed after few weeks of working with YOSEMITE

My hard disc with 1tb failed with bad sectors which could not be repaired at my end and had to send it necessarily to service provider who sits at 500kms away and all my work came to a grinding halt,my question is whether with an external hard disc can I load and continue working with the external hard disc,are there any symptoms where in we can understand that the hard disc is going to fail and take preventive measures,I am from INDIA and I cannot switch over to products other than APPLE please guide me

Be sure to replace the hard drive/IR cable whenever you have a hard drive issue on this model of machine.

The short answer to your immediate question is: Yes, you can boot from an external drive (USB, FireWire or Thunderbolt), as long as the external drive has an operating system that will boot your computer. If you have a bootable flash drive or DVD around and a Time Machine backup, you can:

  1. attach your external HD and Time Machine drive
  2. boot from your flash/DVD
  3. restore your last Time Machine backup to the external drive

Once you've done that, you should be able to reboot from the external drive. Your data will be in the same state as the last time you did a backup.
