The battery is charged but the laptop doesn't stay on?

Hi. I have a MacBook Pro 17" 2.33 GHz Intel.

The battery is charged but the Macbook cannot run off the battery; it's need to be connected to the AC at all times.

Any idea what the issue maybe?

Options

The most likely issue is your SMC needs to be reset. Follow this Apple TN: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).
