On the intel iMacs you have to completely tear the machine down to get to the stand attachment.

Yep, I can confirm this as I just took the stand off an iMac I trash picked the other day. You must remove the Logic Board and numerous other parts too. Not for beginners!

Yes it is possible to remove the stand from the iMac. It just requires complete disassembly. Look at this and find your iMac to see how to do it, but most of them come apart in a very similar fashion.
