internal HD loads, runs, stops with spin wheel

Hi,

My iMac loads fine, then after a while my internal hard drive (or fan?) makes a ‘spin up’ sound and then I get the spinning beach ball and everything freezes up.

I’ve done multiple clean installs and I still eventually get this problem. No problem booting from my external drive.

In the past on a rare occasion I have had a fan go on constantly at boot which was fixed with a reboot but that hasn’t happened recently.

Tried Tech Tool Pro but that shows nothing wrong with my hard disk, either does the disk utility or the Apple hardware test (off cd). Nothing showing up wrong with the iMac using the Apple hardware test either.

Has my hard drive died or is it worse?

since the iMac can start without problems from an external drive, i would say the problem is the internal drive. surely it could ba also a controller/cable related problem - but the easiest way to find out is to replace the harddrive.

use the Hard Drive replacement guide and replace the drive

Cheers, thanks.

If I replace the hard drive and it's the controller/cable - what should I look for to fix?

if it's a controller issue - you can't fix it, if it's the cable - replace it. but i don't think that the cable is defective. never had a controller problem on computers with that age (and they should have more problems than the hdd). thats why i think it's the hdd. depending on the enclosure and the type of your external drive - amybe you can use it as a "replacement" - it has osx on it and should work right from the beginning
