Water Damage, No boot up, Flash comes on.

So my girlfriend dropped her brand new iPhone in a sink! :S She says she took it out and turned it straight off. I've opened it, taken the screen off, logic board and battery out. Some corrosion on the screen connectors etc. Cleaned the logic board and components left in the phone with isopropyl alcohol, and let it thoroughly dry. Now having been re-assembled, the phone will not boot up, and when plugged in the flash comes on and stays on. It does this even with the battery disconnected. iTunes/ PC does not recognise it all.

It is obviously some kind of short but is it recoverable? Any advice would be much appreciated, otherwise it's off to the Apple shop :(

Answer this question I have this problem too

You are correct in that the flash staying on is a short somewhere--something is making contact where it shouldn't.

If you take it to Apple, you will most likely receive a refurbished device at a sizable cost. Do you have any repair shops in your area that are good with water damaged devices? Sounds like the board could use a deep cleaning with an ultrasonic.

Unfortunately not, most places are the usual shops that sell cases and do the occasional screen, nowhere with that kind of capability. The refurbishment cost isn't a huge issue, just looking for anything more I can try before throwing in the towel.

If I were to attempt ultrasonic cleaning, do you know if this would suffice? http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/jpl-ultra-7000...

That would suit your purposes just fine since you just need one large enough to fit your device in.

Thanks, will give it a shot and report back!

I did this recently and took the main components apart and put it in a tub of rice, it worked with no problems

Rice is one of those things you read about a lot online or hear about as being a miracle cure. In fact, putting your device in rice can cause more harm than you think, depending upon the type of water damage. If you suck all that moisture out you're leaving all of the impurities just sitting on the board in a nice static state, to make contact or corrode. The best option, hands down, is to get it to a shop that does water damage treatment immediately, or if you are versed in the procedures (or can wing it), do it yourself.

One thing to remember is that water damage treatment is NOT a solution! It is a crutch that will enable you to use your device for an indeterminate amount of time before it fails. I often tell people with water damage that this is just to get their data off and tide them over until they can replace their device.
