Tried resetting pram, reinstalling OS X, tried various commands suggested and still getting a grey screen at startup. What could the problem be and how to fix it?? Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Do you have an external display which you can hook up? How about a bootable external HD?
Using both you should new able to isolate out if the internal display or the HD (OS) is damaged.
If neither one gets you anything different you'll likely need to open the system to make a thorough inspection for damage (moisture and/or burnt components).
