How to upgrade Apple-installed SSD?

Hi there! My Mid-2011 iMac currently has a 2TB HDD and a 256gb SSD installed from Apple. I would like to upgrade the factory installed SSD (APPLE SSD TS256C) to a faster / larger SSD to increase performance and have more space.

1. Is there any particular SSD I should be on the look out for? How big an issue is native TRIM support (with Trim Enabler)?

2. Which instructions should I follow to upgrade the SSD? I've seen guides for replacing the hard drive or for installing a dual hard drive kit, but I just want to replace the existing SSD with a new one.

3. Do I need to purchase any additional hardware / mounting brackets / etc?

Thanks so much!

I have the same issue, does anyone know how the construction is inside? are there 2 separate disks, like Apple suggested when we ordered the imac, or is the 256 ssd on-board?

The Apple SSD is a standard 2.5" SSD so you can use just about anything in its place.

But before you do you'll need to break the Fusion drive setup if you have that setup. You may want to consider upgrading your HD to a SSHD (hybrid drive) and leaving the SSD as is if you have it setup as the boot drive. Or, do both!

To your points you have all of the needed hardware present and you can use the dual drive guide to help you as the drive is mounted to a frame where the IFIXIT guide has the HD/SSD mounted. It will be obvious how it all fits together when you see it. Nothing special here.
