Turns on, but then turns off

Hey guys,

I was watching an episode of my fav tv show when the screen of my macbook froze. So I held down the power button as I did many times before and it turned off. After that I waited 5 minutes and tried to turn it back on. The white screen with the apple symbol appeared to me and a little bar underneath, like the one that appears after you updated the system. It took an eternity to load everything. Then the users page appeared so I could enter my password, and so I did. After that it all turned black, but I could still see the little mouse arrow.

Now it just shows the white screen with the apple and goes immediately black.

What should I do? I already tried turning it on the safe mode but it didn't work out.

Will I lose my pictures, music and etc?

Please help me asap.

As to your root issue. You could have a bad HD or the GPU is having a problem.

Do you have access to a second Mac system which you can connect to? Follow this Apple TN: OS X: Manually migrating data from another Mac to copy off (backup) your files you don't want to loose. If your lucky you'll get a chance to save things.

  • If you can get access via Target mode you should try running Disk Utility to check out the MacBook Pro's HD.
  • If you can't access the HD at all under Target mode you'll need to take the HD out of the system and try accessing the HD via an external case or universal SATA to USB cable from the second Mac system. Again copy off what you need and then run Disk Utility to check the drive out. Follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Hard Drive Replacement. In this case we're not replacing the drive yet only taking it out.
  • If you can't get the system to respond under Target Mode and you were able to access the files via an external case or Universal cable it's starting to should like the GPU maybe encountering a problem. At this point you may want to let a pro handle things as they have some tools that you don't to try fixing the logic board or they may need to replace it.
