SSD in the Optical Drive slot?

I'm seeing mixed messages on whether I can use two SSDs - one 512GB in the normal HD slot as my boot disc, and one 256 GB in the optical slot using the Unibody Laptop Dual Drive enclosure. (Unibody Laptop Dual Drive)

Some say the SSD in the optical enclosure will work fine, some say it will crash. To be clear, I just plan on using this SSD as storage, so no system level stuff will be loaded to it.

It depends on what model you have.

The issue here is the SATA port the optical drive is using is not SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) compliant in all models (clock rate appears to be the factor). So you'll need to get a SSD which you can lock down to SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) to be sure it will work.

As reference review the red section at the bottom: OWC Data Doubler. All carriers are effected.

I have used Samsung 840 and 840 EVO drives in various models between mid-2010 and late-2012 (non-retina) without any issues in the optical bay.
