Distorted Video and Vertical Bands

Block Image

I acquired a used Samsung LN40B530P7F display. The television had been working perfectly for several years. According to the original owner (my parents) the problem progressed slowly over the course of about a week and did not suddenly appear.

The television turns on and has good audio. The right side of the screen has three or four thick and distinct vertical bands in which no picture is discernable. The left side has video with crisp edges, but the color is malformed and washed out. The backlight appears to be on and lit uniformly.

I was told by someone who was knowledgeable that this was almost certainly a t-con problem. I purchased a used one and the issue occurs nearly identical regardless of which t-con is installed. I have reseated all three cables several times. I find it hard to believe I have two bad t-cons with the exact same issue. Given that I do have some video, good audio, and backlight, I find it hard to believe that the main board or the power supply is at fault. The screen has not been physically dropped or damaged in any way.

I'm looking for additional suggestions short of "throw it out". I'm hoping to fix this to give it to my kids for Christmas.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

I cleaned up the tab but decided not to attempt a repair. Looks like this unit was part of the exploding cap lawsuit from a few years back. This unit just lasted longer than most.

this looks lmore like a tab error. See if you can put some pressure on the TAB on the top of the LCD and if that makes a difference.

Thank you oldturkey03. At your suggestion, I tore down the display a little further. This particular model is upside down from most of the examples I've seen. The t-con and tabs are actually on the bottom and housed inside an outer steel frame requiring the removal of the entire bezel and a portion of the interior frame.

Once I got into the display to actually see the tabs, the issue became obvious. It looks like a small cap exploded making a mess of the contacts. There is a green tint to the mess which implies that the copper has corroded some, though I'm unsure if that is the case or if that's just the dielectric material from capacitor.

My thought is that IS probably fixable but a little beyond my skillset. I'd like to take a stab at it but I've screwed myself over in the past using inappropriate cleaning products on delicate devices (contact cleaner WILL destroy nearby plastic). The cap is attached to traditional solid board with good contacts, so I think I can repair that part.

Does anyone have recommendations on how to go about cleaning this mess up?

Backing soda an water mix and a small soft brush. Then a rinse with sterile water followed by a final cleaning with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol should take care of that. Make sure the traces are in good order and no need to really scrub it, since that could potentially knock of more components. You do know how to solder etc. Looks like this might just be fixable....any chance you can take a picture of the complete back of the TV. I know that it is a N64C chassis but want to make sure that I have the right service manual. This may help to identify the caps that are corroded. Also, a panel number would be great to have and may be of further help as well
