When I hook my phone up to the device to play a phone conversation or music, the sound that comes out of the speaker is muffled or projects crackling sounds. The conversation or music being played cannot be heard clearly.

First you should clean the front plate of the speaker. If the distortion continues after that then you will need to open up the device and clean the actual speaker or replace it. Refer to the guide for speaker replacement here.
