Why is my display blacking out

Hi there,

So the display on my macbook keeps blacking out. Originally I was instructed to to change my data display cable, I've done that but the problem still persists. Based on similar reports on Ifixit I'm now thinking it may be the inverter or the inverter cable. Is there anyway of knowing for sure? My display usually starts up black, almost closing the lid gets it to light back up, but opening beyond 90degrees has it blacking out again.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

Alright I replaced the inverter cable and all seems well! I can tilt my screen to my hearts content. Let's hope it last. Thanks for the suggestions Oldturkey and Dan!

Yes, using a flashlight aim it at the front of the display at an angle can you see your desktop icons? If you do then the backlight circuit is having problems which is likely the inverter and/or the inverter cable. It's best to replace both at the same time.

If you noted the screen was getting dim or only one side appeared lit then its possible the CFL's are going as well.

dacode34, this ""My display usually starts up black, almost closing the lid gets it to light back up, but opening beyond 90degrees has it blacking out again." would make me suggest that you replace the cable first.
