Why have my function keys switched functions around?

The keys along the top of the keyboard have all changed or stopped functioning completely, I haven't tried to change anything at all and it just suddenly stopped working, for example the volume up button now takes you to dashboard and all the play/back/forward buttons don't work at all. Help?

Or use a Key re-mapper app to reassign the functions to those keys.

Apple changed the function keys functions so the symbols may not line up with what they do in newer OS versions.

Depending on what OS-X you have you can re-assign the keys by opening up the keyboard preferences.

Sadly, Leopard was the last release this worked. From Lion and forward this was dropped.

The other method is to order replacement keycaps with the newer assignments. Which is how we fixed this nonsense. Here's one source of the needed parts and how to pop them off: The Book Yard - MacBook Pro keycaps
