How to boot new hard drive with old hard drive data?

Just installed new hard drive (NVidia, 1TB, 5400rpm; purchased through iFixit) and I'm trying to transfer data from Time Capsule using Migration Assistant. New hard drive is listed under SATA. However, the Migration Assistant is not recognizing new hard drive as recipient. Please help. Any suggestions?

PS I also have old drive with USB connection if that helps.

AFAIK you install the OS on the new drive, at boot you choose restore from . . . or you put both drives into migration assistant and then they sync.

You could also boot from the old drive then use Disk Utility (or any other clone app) to restore (aka clone) the old drive to the new one.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it.

Thank you for the suggestion. I was able to use Disk Utility to "restore" the old drive data onto the new hard drive. Many thanks.
