Why does the iMac not boot sometimes.

My iMac started to have a problem booting it begins to boot where you hear the optical drive and Mac sound goes off. But then it stuck on a black screen where it's not responsive. If you wait maybe 10 to 20 mints it might turn. Most of the time if I unplug the back power cable and wait for the Mac to cool down than plug it in it starts normally. If I restart the computer it back to the same problems discussed earlier. Over all the Mac works well when it's on.

One more thing the Mac also sometimes when booting give me many white and black lines and dots moving all over the screen and the apple log with the curser near the right side of the screen loading instead of being in the middle. And if you put the Mac to sleep it turns on with a blue screen also not responsive

Does any one know what it might be

The system has 3gb ram running osx 10.9

The artifacts showing up across your screen implies the graphics board is having problems. Sounds like you'll need to get your system repaired. Are you up to doing it your self?

OK Jakob, This is a big job! Review the IFIXIT guide, get a new Graphics board for your system: Radeon HD 2400 XT or Radeon HD 2600 PRO and two tubes of thermal paste Arctic Silver Thermal Paste.

Here's the needed steps: iMac Intel 20" EMC 2133 and 2210 Video Card Replacement.

But before you start make sure you have the needed tools and ESD mat & wrist strap (properly grounded) as you will be working on static sensitive parts and lastly a good work surface and light.

how can you be sure its the video card because when the mac starts its does function normally and has no sign of video card issues

Because of your symptom: "many white and black lines and dots moving all over"
