Canon EOS Rebel XT error messages?

First time getting Error 99 message.

I discovered that I can take unfocused pictures with no error with no lens on. when in auto focus, it tries to take a pic but the screen blinks message of 2c or sometimes 3c and 4c etc and the n error turns to err 99.

what could be the problem. please help.
