How can I tell which SSD drives are compatible?

I'm looking to add an SSD either using an internal kit, or externally using a separate housing and USB3.0 cable.

I believe SATA III is what the Mini supports so does that mean any SATA III SSD will work or do I need to meet certain criteria? Like UASP for example?

I've been reading reviews of various SSDs for a while for my Windows PC but sites like Crucial only list a relatively small number as guaranteed compatible.
