Why does the dial not turn?

The dial is stuck in one position and will not rotate in either direction. I could try applying more force to the dial, but I am afraid of breaking the frail plastic dial.

Options

Do not force the dial out of the position the dial is stuck in. To avoid breaking anything, you should follow the Brightness Dial Replacement guide to replace a possibly broken dial, which involves removing the front panel.
