laptop is stuck in update failure configuring update

Hello, my laptop needed an update. It ran thru for an hour or two then went into a failure configuring update. It acts as tho it is still updating. I would be very appreciative if someone could explain to me what to do to stop this. I saw someone other post about it and it said to turn computer off then while turning back on hold shift then tap f8 until it goes to a maintenance page. It doesn't work for me. Still goes back to same failure update. Please help! Thank you in advance.
